THE BEAUTY TALK
HEY MARI! SO TELL ME... WHEN DO YOU FEEL AT YOUR BEST?
When I feel that I am where I am supposed to be. Last July I was in Paris and went to see an exhibition about Van Gogh at La Villette which was very immersive. There, I felt I was complete; all my senses were nourished. Usually the place where I feel the best at to think about my life is on the plane. I put some music in my ears and I just meditate. I cry, I write, I connect with myself. I started a spiritual process several months ago where I would go away on retreats to continue this meditative work on myself. I’m in a quest to connect with myself. Respecting myself.
WHAT DO YOU THINK MAKES YOU BEAUTIFUL?
To have a good sense of humor? And lightness. Sometimes I forget to be light. And in order not to be hypocrite, I will also say that I love skin products and a good night of beauty sleep!
YOU HAVE BEEN RECENTLY VERY FOCUSED ON YOUR INNER BEAUTY, INNER SELF, GOING TO RETREATS IN NATURE. IS THAT SOMETHING NECESSARY TO HELP YOU BALANCE THE CRAZINESS OF BEING A “SUPERSTAR”?
Yes I think so. Travelling abroad also is very helpful. When I am in Paris I can take the bus and watch people and no one recognizes me. Sport and nature are also a good thing: hiking, going to a waterfall, to the beach… I need that.
DO YOU GO TO THE BEACH IN RIO?
No (laughs). I mean I do sometimes but I prefer to go to Paraty for example. There, a friend of mine lends me his boat. It is heaven.
HOW HAS YOUR BEAUTY ROUTINE EVOLVED THROUGH THE YEARS ?
I always take my make-up off before going to bed, even if I am tired or tipsy (laughs). Always! When I am not working, I will only use a bit of concealer for my dark circles and some lipstick. And sunscreen! I love taking care of my skin with beauty treatments like laser, and massages! I love going to Dominique Beauté (editor's note: check out the story of Dominique's founder here) for example, where I get amazing face massages. I love massages in general: face, body, feet! And of course I go to the gym. I also like to have a good food regime.
DO YOU COOK?
Not exactly (laughs). If I need to, I can. I know how to cook but I don’t have a lot of time... Fortunately, I have an amazing chef at home. I am lucky. I love a good salad, fish, soup, quinoa… But I’ll eat anything. As long as it is balanced.
DO YOU HAVE A SWEET TOOTH?
Mmmmm. Definitively!
WHAT IS YOUR TYPICAL BREAKFAST?
In the morning I’ll have a green juice, some tapioca and eggs sometimes. And avocado. I love avocado.
HERE IN BRAZIL AVOCADO IS A SWEET DISH.
Yes but I eat it like you, as a salty dish, since the first time I travelled to England when I was younger. I remember the first day I was served a salad with an avocado and I was like “what?”. I have loved it this way ever since.
TELL ME ABOUT HAVING A FRINGE. HAS IT CHANGED YOUR PERSONALITY SINCE YOU CUT IT?
I love it! And yes I think it has changed a little bit of my personality. It kind of changed my style a little bit too.
IS IT YOUR REAL HAIR COLOR? ANY SPECIAL TREATMENT?
Kind of (laughs). The basis is that, and then I do some highlights. I love to put some coconut oil to moisturize it, especially when doing a sauna session.
WHAT IS YOUR SIGNATURE MAKE-UP LOOK WHEN YOU GO OUT ?
I’m blond so I need to do my eyebrows and I like to wear mascara. And sometimes a red lipstick.
BEST BEAUTY ADVICE GIVEN TO YOU?
Cut that fringe! Haha. Also I discovered semi-permanent false eyelashes. And I love it. You wake up "happy" with beautiful eyelashes, you go to waterfalls or underwater with eyelashes… I have a lot of make-up tricks obviously from my job like chamomile tea bags for dark circles or plunging your face in ice-water: the best and cheapest facial you’ll ever get!
THANK YOU BEAUTIFUL MARI xx

The story that we shot with Mariana Ximenes is a visual metaphor of a woman facing a difficult moment in her life, but is strong enough to confront it. Every woman has her own individual story. A story that is uniquely beautiful, yet we can all relate to the emotions that come out of these moments. When you feel the support of other women, not only do you feel stronger, but you also feel you can achieve anything. It is one of the purest feelings in the world. Suddenly there is no more competition, just fuel for more.
The proceeds from this limited-edition of five photographs, signed by Mariana Ximenes and by the photographer Autumn Sonnichsen will go to Asplande, a non-governmental organization working with women from favelas and peripheral regions of Rio de Janeiro.
